VIT rules at a glance
The numbers that actually matter — grade scale, the 75% attendance line, how CGPA works, and what happens when things go sideways — pulled straight from VIT's official regulations.
Grade scale
| Grade | Points | Marks | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | 10 | ≥ 90 | Outstanding — pass |
| A | 9 | ≥ 80 | Pass |
| B | 8 | ≥ 70 | Pass |
| C | 7 | ≥ 60 | Pass |
| D | 6 | ≥ 55 | Pass |
| E | 5 | ≥ 50 | Pass (lowest) |
| F | 0 | ≥ 0 | Failed — re-register the course |
| N | 0 | — | Component not cleared / debarred / absent in FAT — re-register |
Pass grades: S, A, B, C, D, E, P. Special: W (Course registration withdrawn); U (Audit course successfully completed); P (Passed a Pass/Fail course (not counted in CGPA)).
Attendance
Minimum
75% per course (100% expected)
If you fall short
Falling below 75% in a course means you are 'debarred' from the next exam component. Being debarred from the FAT results in an 'N' grade — you must re-register the course and clear it with a performance grade.
Relaxation
Students with CGPA ≥ 9.00 may receive an attendance relaxation, but it is withdrawn the moment CGPA falls below 9.00 and never extends to FAT eligibility.
GPA & CGPA
GPA
GPA = Σ(Cᵢ × GPᵢ) / Σ Cᵢ (per semester)
Weighted average of the grade points across all courses registered in a semester — each course's grade point times its credits, divided by total credits registered.

CGPA
CGPA = Σ(Cᵢ × GPᵢ) / Σ Cᵢ (across all semesters since the first)
Rounded to two decimal places. 'F' grade credits ARE included; Pass/Fail, audit, Minor and Honours courses are excluded from CGPA.

Percentage
% equivalent = CGPA × 10 (e.g. a CGPA of 8.75 ≈ 87.5%)
Academic standing & credits
CGPA < 4
A CGPA below 4.0 at any time means you are advised to register for a maximum of 16 credits. Continued failure to improve can lead to cancellation of studentship (reviewed by a Dean of Academics committee).
Credit limits
Per-semester minimum/maximum credit limits are fixed by the regulations; the final registration may drop below the minimum to complete the programme. Total credits required to graduate are programme-specific.
Missing an exam
Re-CAT
Missing a CAT forfeits its weightage — there is no general Re-CAT. A Re-CAT-I is allowed only for specific cases (approved internships abroad, academy fellowships, placement activities, hospitalization), and only if the attendance requirement is met.
Re-FAT
A Re-FAT is granted only under extraordinary conditions (in-patient hospitalization beyond a week, or death of a family member). You apply to the Vice Chancellor within 14 calendar days of the FAT with proper evidence. An 'N' grade is converted to a performance grade after the Re-FAT (Section 9.11).
FFCS & Honours
FFCS
Fully Flexible Credit System — you choose your courses, slots and faculty each semester. Course components: Theory (L), Tutorial (T), Lab/Practical (P) and Project / J-component.

Honours
An 'Honours' credential is offered for completing additional Discipline/Specialization Elective credits beyond your curriculum requirement. Honours and Minor courses are not counted in the programme CGPA. High performers may also be recognised in the 'Honours Club'.
